Broccoli Issue 19 Art Submissions Call

Hello, photographers and illustrators!

We are currently in production mode for Broccoli Issue 19, publishing in spring 2024. We are seeking uniquely beautiful art to showcase as visual essays or pair with articles we have already commissioned.

The deadline for art submissions is August 11, 2023. Please read this message carefully for details and instructions.

This call is primarily for photographers and illustrators, not artists who work in 3D forms like ceramics, textiles, sculpture, etc. Please note we are not accepting AI art pitches (digital art made by a human is fine), nor are we seeking graphic designers for magazine design purposes.

Themes we are exploring include:
✿ Weed (of course!)
✿ The future
✿ Collections
✿ Phenomena
✿ Digital dreams
✿ Unusual plants

These themes are loose and open to interpretation. If you want to share something outside these realms, please do.

But before you submit, please read on for the three types of submissions we accept and general guidelines on how to pitch us your work.

We are looking for three types of submissions:
✿ Existing image sets to license
✿ Pitches for new work
✿ Portfolio shares

Image set licensing
Let’s say you have an image set or series already made that you think would fit in Broccoli’s pages. We’d love to see! Please send us 5-8 images from a single series or theme. If we’re interested in licensing your work, we will offer you a licensing fee based on the number of images we want to use. We do not require exclusivity on licensing, and it’s ok if the images have been seen before.

Pitches for new work
Got an original concept you’d like to explore? Send us some information about your idea, plus links to your work or a portfolio attachment. Simple mood boards are welcome, but please don’t go overboard—it’s not necessary. A couple of references and a portfolio are enough. If you have a budget in mind to execute your idea, please let us know.

Portfolio shares
If you’re interested in working for Broccoli, send us your portfolio and/or links to your work. We will keep you in mind for commissions.

General guidelines for all art submissions
✿ Please send web res for now (no giant files)
✿ You must have high res available upon request at 300 DPI (for print)
✿ You must own the rights to the work. If you have collaborators, please ensure you have their permission. For photo shoots, typically the photographer is the rights-holder.
✿ Please share via attachment (web-res JPG or PDF showing all images), or publicly viewable links (anyone with the link can view)
✿ We prefer attachments and public links over WeTransfer downloads.
Please do not use Dropbox's email sharing system, because we won’t be able to open it. Please only use their public "anyone with the link can view" option.

How to submit Follow all the above instructions based on your type of submission, and email us at hi@broccolimag.com by August 11th.

For licensing and pitch submissions, we will let you know ASAP if it’s a yes, a no, or a maybe. Once the submission period ends, we'll let you know if it's a yes or a no.

For portfolio submissions, we will let you know that we’ve received your work. We may reach back out in the future if we have a commission for you, but there's no need to follow up.

Questions? Contact us at hi@broccolimag.com. Looking forward to hearing from you!
