The Family Acid: Double Exposures collects the double visions of voracious documenter Roger Steffens.
These double exposures shot on 35 mm film capture over five decades of the everyday life of Roger, his wife Mary, and their children Devon and Kate: a regular California nuclear family—“but on acid”—and the counterculture they were immersed in. Curated by archivist Kate, these images are happy accidents, cosmic jokes, and in-camera compositions that pursue the multiplicities within a subject. From Steffens’ double exposures emerge hallucinatory auras of the transformative era when they were made, inviting the viewer to look past the singular to find beauty and truth through juxtaposition.
