Look skyward, writers ~
Gaze at the moon’s mesmeric sheen. Contemplate the burnished glow of the sun. Then, send us a pitch.
Broccoli is developing a new, single-issue, print-only, conceptual magazine suffused with celestial wonder: SUN + MOON.
Half of the stories will revolve around the sun, and the other half will deal with the moon. These new nonfiction pieces will transport readers to a curious, entrancing, timeless realm of wonder rooted in the strange delights of science, history, culture, and myth.
Though these heavenly objects inspire an array of creative endeavors, we are focused on commissioning new nonfiction work. We are not accepting poetry or fiction, academic writing, astrological readings, already-written work, or reprinted articles.
We’ll commission 10 to 20 pieces of new nonfiction writing. Rates will be $.50/word, negotiated as a flat fee at the time of commission.
The editorial team will review every pitch and let you know ASAP if it is not a fit so that you can pitch elsewhere. Pitches should be concise and show real care, deep thought, a singular perspective, and an obsessive, irresistible curiosity.
SUN + MOON pitches are due by 9:00 am EST, Friday, September 20, 2024. Please send them to editors@broccolimag.com. (While the pitch deadline may seem arbitrarily precise, meeting it lets us know that you’ll be able to respect our production timelines.)
Stories will be assigned by September 27, 2024. First drafts will be due by late October/early November 2024.
This pitch call is for writers. A call for artists will go out over our social media channels in the coming weeks, so watch that space for details if you have a hankering to pitch celestial art.
Please do not send attachments—it’s faster (and safer) for us to review pitches that are in the body of an email.
If you have more than one story idea (excellent!), put them all in a single email.
